Received the typeset proof today of the paper presented at the International Conference on The Book 2010. Conference took place at St Gallen University , Switzerland.

Typical House in St Gallen centre

My paper (hold on as it’s the longest title in history) The Book an Adaptation from the Film: Technology, Narrative, Business & How the Book Industry Might Adapt the Film was subsequently accepted for publication in the journal that accompanies the conference and will appear in the next volume, volume number 8.  There’s a couple of minor proofing corrections to do. Not entirely sure of the journal publication date but will no doubt post when I do know.

There’s a video here of the famous Abbey Library in St Gallen. Video isn’t really allowed so I took this on my phone hiding behind a pillar.

The next Book Conference takes place in Toronto, Canada in October. Never been to Toronto but this street in St Gallen looked fantastic so be hard to beat for very different experience to my norm.

8th International Conference on The Book

November 9, 2010

Delivered presentation at the 8th International Conference on The Book which took place 6-8th in St Gallen, Switzerland.
Felt that my paper about how the film industry might provide a role model for the book industry really felt accurate after listening to the plenary speakers throughout the week with the panel discussion in particular alluding to many issues I discuss.
I have a month to make any amendments before submitting paper for possible inclusion in the International journal on the book.

Book Conference- timely topic

July 23, 2010

Every day seems to bring another article about how the book publishing industry is being affected by technology. eBooks, eReaders, online book sellers etc. Today’s story was about how authors signed to Agent Andrew Wylie’s agency were aiming to cut out the publishers and sell directly to Amazon. My research paper due to be presented at the 8th Annual Conference On The Book at the University of St Gallen, St Gallen, Switzerland is about what the book publishing industry can learn from how the film industry dealt with new technology in the late 1970’s early 1980’s. Today’s story reminded me of the end of the long-term contract studios signed with authors. I might discuss these parallels in the paper also now as it seems apt and again similar models might be adopted by book publishers.

‘The Book’ Conference Abstract

July 4, 2010

Link here to the abstract for my next paper presentation.  Conference takes place in St Gallen, Switzerland. De Sautoy had something in the Guardian this week about apps and structure. There’s a lot of stuff about this now, especially with the release of iPad so an interesting area at the moment. As you can see if you’ve checked out the link my paper is a little different to ‘the app is the thing approach’. Got to finish off the paper now over the next couple of weeks.
