Paper done and delivered, trains, flights hotel booked. Super busily trying to get stuff sorted before I go. Working on presentation. Thinking of doing it in Motion to play with that tool.
Never used it, some experience of AE but wanting to deliver some teaching in Motion anyways so it’ll be a good opportunity. Aiming to get something done over the next week. Already done a Keynote pres that i’ll be converting to ppt so if the Motion I create is shit/doesn’t happen then I’ll already have one done. Thinking of taking my computer which I don’t normally do. Not seen the presentation schedule yet but if i’m later on not earlier on, then I’ll almost certainly take it so I can work on the presentation in the evenings, around the conference dinners, sightseeing etc or just to have it and play from my machine. I’ve a Henry Miller quote that I want to record as audio to play in also alongside mostly text and taking my machine will ensure that it all works. In Avanca last year for the avanca cinema film festival/conference (check it out and go if possible.) I spent ages making sure my videos were going to play properly only to have a machine that didnt deal with video codecs so the edited intro video that i’d worked on didn’t work as I only had the opp to test it literally a few seconds before the presentation. I had to improvise.
Reminder of conference here

in preparation for my Avanca Cinema presentation (hopefully) in July I’m reading Techniques of The Photoplay written by Frederick Palmer. This book was published in 1924.
In the Dramatic Construction chapter the following elements are listed:
Drama-Characterisation-Motive-Action-Conflict-Suspense-Contrast-Incident-Situation-Crisis-Sequence-Climax-Ending-Significance-Theme-Unity-Illusion of Reality-Probability- Coincidence and Preparation-Human Interest-Love Interest-Comedy in Drama-Heroic Values-Picture Values-Novelty
I’ve read a few scriptwriting books in my time, though tend not to make notes and therefore don’t really remember the points which of course is deliberate and I like and I was struck by how little has changed in 90 odd years. It made me think that McKee, Truby, Seger et al are all somewhat redundant.
I’m awaiting Epes Winthrop Sargent book on the same subject written in 1912.
Reading these books written in the silent movie era is really cool. The Palmer book makes a reference to its student readers remembering The Great Train Robbery of 1897!
I think this book is available free via the Gutenberg Project so check it out online if intrigued.

Yesterday my ‘Marvelisation” Paper got accepted into the International Conference Cinema: Technology, Arts, Communication 2013 in Avanca, Portugal. Hoping now get money together to go and present paper for its inclusion in the book that is published following the conference.
Done variery of reading and writing the paper up now. Need to do more on Disney and Star Wars and timeliness of paper’s topic makes this easy enough.
I think we’re heading for a new, dominant period of Disneyfication in Hollywood cinema over the next decade, two decades and paper adopts this position as its thesis.

Of course as soon as I start reading material for my paper is get new ideas about older ongoing projects. Furiously note-taking as I jump between three projects.
But as ever it will be a test of ‘apres le deluge’

Submitted my abstract for Avanca Cinema Conference a couple of days ago.
The title is “Marvelization: The Rise of Complex Narratology on the Hollywood Screen.”
Lovely title isn’t it. I like it so insist that you must also.
Should find out if paper is accepted April time so quite a wait
The conference is July 24-28.

Trying to go to Avanca Cinema Conference in Avanca, Portugal later this year. Now know what I’m going to be writing about so working on the paper now.
Tried to go for a number of years as the conference plus film festival always sounds interesting year after year.
Let’s hope I can get it together this year and go. Conference is in July but got 28th Feb deadline for the abstract. Got two different ideas I’m working on.

Just discovered I have a clash with the Avanca conference and now will no longer be submitting an abstract as the conference doesn’t appear to allow virtual presentation. Perhaps next year?
