Nixon Book

272 pages into the Nixon book.

Enjoying it so far. Don’t really know much about Nixon beyond the obvious running against Kennedy & Watergate stuff and the Oliver Stone film of course, which I seem to remember enjoying but of which has to be, by its very nature, heavily fictionalised.
Reads like he had some deep-seated self-esteem issues and couldn’t forgive any slights and had couldn’t just creep a win but had to dominate and destroy.

Reading material

June 19, 2018

Just started on the Wu’s Attention Merchants a couple of days ago but the problem with working in the library rather than going into the office is one ends up surrounded by books so now picked up these two.

Made me think of Obama’s Audacity of Hope and these two’s philosophy could be subtitles the ‘audacity of lies’

Book- Central Park Five

May 18, 2018

Re reading material post of earlier: Read Young Henry. The ending skipped forward a lot I felt, not such a well-balanced book for me. Difficult I guess to not cover all the stuff we already know but still felt the last 20-50 pages not so good.

The ‘Sleepwalking into WW1’ book was almost the opposite. The level of detail was nearly overwhelming. The set was really close so felt like a wade through but enjoyed it and learned a lot.

Now reading the book below.

Not sure if I’ve seen the Ken Burns Doco or just feel that I’ve seen it and this case was referenced a lot during the Presidential primaries and since.

I was in New York in 1990-91 for 3 months so this, the Howard Beach racial incident and some of the others mentioned at the start of the book were still super present in the city at the time.

Aarhus, Denmark

May 12, 2018

Just back from a visit to Aarhus, Denmark. Went to check out this module at this uni to see the fit with the BA Filmmaking at NTU.
See most recent showreels for the work produced from this module here and here.

Never been to Scandinavia before and really enjoyed. Shown around by an old friend and really liked the vibe of Denmark’s second largest city.

The dock area where the film city (film byen) is located was buzzy with lots of media companies and studio spaces as part of this development.

Went to a bar where tennis super pro caroline wozniacki frequents/frequented and as I say, really enjoyed it and feel it will be a good fit for the students.

update

March 12, 2018

Been super busy. working on a number of research projects, 1 subject to an nda so can’t show much but been really fun, editing 15 secs insta versions of video. Playing with trying to get the same ‘power’ into the 15 secs as the longer version of a test edit carry.

Other project is a project with architecture where the research is into using camera to measure bridge deformation. Research question is how effective can cheaper camera be? Ordinarily the cameras used cost 30G or upwards.

Posted a couple of images of an in lab test.

When the weather gets better we’ll be going on into the field to do some further tests. My role is to acquire the measurement data and I’m also making a creative film, working title, ‘buildings that breathe’.

I also submitted a doco idea for this https://whickersworldfoundation.com
