Den Haag is about 45 mins train journey from A’Dam so I also went to and saw Boyhood which I enjoyed alot

and I went to Rembrandthuis musuem as well which was cool. One fortunate result of him going bankkrupt is the inventory and his paintings allowed seemingly accurate recreation of the house, its decor and contents.

They also do demonostration of techniques there and above is a print of an etching done during a demo.

‘Cot’ is tick tocking along. Unusually for me I actually did some research before writing it, I normally write first and research later. Spoke to someone (via email) who worked in Immigration services until very recently and thatw as useful.
Currently working on the promotional pack, casting and finishing the extract script pages. The BHM Live Showcase is April to an invited industry audience.

Cot- new project

November 3, 2014

working on Cot an idea for the stage that’s being developed by Serendipity as part of a Black History Month workshop commission. Cot is a story about a young boy detained in an immigration centre or some such place and the immigration worker who tries to establish where boy is from so he cane be sent back there. The idea is that i work on the piece and then it’s showcased at Curve Leicester in Feb.

Toronto Creating Characters Done

May 24, 2014

Creating Characters International Symposium at Humber Institute of Technology and Learning (ITAL), Lakeshore Drive, Toronto is finished. Mine was the last presentation of the three days and went well. The last day we had Barry Flatman, Joseph Kertes, and Wayson Choy attend. They discussed creating characters and both the break from the presentation of papers style and the content, what they discussed and the way they discussed it was really good. Overall the symposium was excellent. Lots of interesting conversation after each of the varied events. People were from Toronto, Barcelona, Manitoba (Winnipeg), Oklahoma, New York, Ireland, South Korea, Perth, Oporto (plus other places I’ve now forgotten) with the disciplines being as varied as the journeys we had made.

Hopefully details of how to access the publication will be forthcoming soonish.

NIAGARA FALLS

NIAGARA FALLS

Next’s year’s takes in Barcelona, March 2015 and i’m hopeful the dates will match up with what else I’ve got going on.
I’ll no doubt post details in about 8-10 months time.
Pic of the fantastic Niagara Falls. Ideas can’t simply come from talking, they ahve to be floating about in the mist also.
Whilst at the conference a fellow delegate mentioned this Screenwriting Research Network network which i’d not heard of before

Toronto reading

May 15, 2014

Lining up some books for my jetlag/time difference whilst in Toronto for the Creating Characters Symposium. Never sure if it’s jetlag. I always think jetlag is feeling terrible but I never really do that, I just feel awake/tired. For the parents out there feeling tired at weird times of the day is perfectly normal. So back to the point I’ve got some books

I also got this review copy today.

Script Analysis Book by James Thomas

This one focuses on analysis for Plays Read loads for screens but not that many on plays so looking forward to this.
I’ll also have my Motion version of my presentation to prepare so plenty to keep me awake.

Creating Characters Symposium Paper done

May 8, 2014

Paper done and delivered, trains, flights hotel booked. Super busily trying to get stuff sorted before I go. Working on presentation. Thinking of doing it in Motion to play with that tool.

Never used it, some experience of AE but wanting to deliver some teaching in Motion anyways so it’ll be a good opportunity. Aiming to get something done over the next week. Already done a Keynote pres that i’ll be converting to ppt so if the Motion I create is shit/doesn’t happen then I’ll already have one done. Thinking of taking my computer which I don’t normally do. Not seen the presentation schedule yet but if i’m later on not earlier on, then I’ll almost certainly take it so I can work on the presentation in the evenings, around the conference dinners, sightseeing etc or just to have it and play from my machine. I’ve a Henry Miller quote that I want to record as audio to play in also alongside mostly text and taking my machine will ensure that it all works. In Avanca last year for the avanca cinema film festival/conference (check it out and go if possible.) I spent ages making sure my videos were going to play properly only to have a machine that didnt deal with video codecs so the edited intro video that i’d worked on didn’t work as I only had the opp to test it literally a few seconds before the presentation. I had to improvise.

Reminder of conference here

Creating Characters Symposium

April 25, 2014

Currently working on my paper for the Creating Characters Symposium I’m presenting at in Toronto, mid-May.
Keywords are: Narrative, immersive storytelling, story structure, dwell time, authorship, translation and the audience. Those, unlike the paper title, should give you an idea of the paper’s themes.
Title is “In Thine Eyes I See The Glory: Transition, Translation, The Text and the Captivated Audience.”

I always try and style my paper titles after JMW Turner’s approach to length in regards to the titles of some of his paintings.
