Been super busy. working on a number of research projects, 1 subject to an nda so can’t show much but been really fun, editing 15 secs insta versions of video. Playing with trying to get the same ‘power’ into the 15 secs as the longer version of a test edit carry.
Other project is a project with architecture where the research is into using camera to measure bridge deformation. Research question is how effective can cheaper camera be? Ordinarily the cameras used cost 30G or upwards.
Posted a couple of images of an in lab test.
When the weather gets better we’ll be going on into the field to do some further tests. My role is to acquire the measurement data and I’m also making a creative film, working title, ‘buildings that breathe’.
I also submitted a doco idea for this https://whickersworldfoundation.com

My name is jools- it’s been 12 weeks since my last update. Been super busy. Been crimbo and I’ve been to Maurithuis museum in Den Haag, Holland.
Maurithuis Museum Exterior
Den Haag is about 45 mins train journey from A’Dam so I also went to and saw Boyhood which I enjoyed alot
and I went to Rembrandthuis musuem as well which was cool. One fortunate result of him going bankkrupt is the inventory and his paintings allowed seemingly accurate recreation of the house, its decor and contents.
Rembrandt Etch&Print Demo Image
They also do demonostration of techniques there and above is a print of an etching done during a demo.
‘Cot’ is tick tocking along. Unusually for me I actually did some research before writing it, I normally write first and research later. Spoke to someone (via email) who worked in Immigration services until very recently and thatw as useful.
Currently working on the promotional pack, casting and finishing the extract script pages. The BHM Live Showcase is April to an invited industry audience.

working on Cot an idea for the stage that’s being developed by Serendipity as part of a Black History Month workshop commission. Cot is a story about a young boy detained in an immigration centre or some such place and the immigration worker who tries to establish where boy is from so he cane be sent back there. The idea is that i work on the piece and then it’s showcased at Curve Leicester in Feb.

80-odd pages into my latest draft of 57 Images Of My Father. Working on it for the Inside Out competition I’ve posted about earlier.
The festival wil show a ten minute extract of all 7 selected writer’s work. I’ve decided my extract section I think but reserving judgement until I get to the end of the draft. Chosen a section that has high energy and has the comic aspects that are an important element of what is quite an esoteric idea. The set-up’ll need some explanation though. I was going to go from the first ten minutes as that is also comic and would have provided some of the exposition but think the new extract selection will be better for the audience to enjoy. Whatever section will be out of context so might as well go with one that pushes the actors and will be fun to play with for all involved in setting up the extracts.
I’m at the stage where I need to print the draft out as I’m struggling to see the shape now. I’ve got a beats treatment and am working to that but need to get the shape of the entire thing so I can then have some time next week working to the Friday delivery and I need to to do that on paper. There is no requirement of the scheme to have an entire new draft but that’s what i’m doing. Spent most of my time trying to focus the ‘journey’ of the two main characters and feel there’s a definite improvement.

Finished Into the Woods by John Yorke.
Into The Woods by John Yorke
Good read. Felt that I’d understood alot after reading it. It has the advantage of specifically referencing other screenwriting books and at times I felt that the authors of some of these books might want the right of reply but it is a very comprehensive look at storytelling.
Not sure if this chimed more as a result of me currently rewriting ’57 Images of My Father’ and I also can’t remember if I feel this way after reading any screenplay books but I certainly enjoyed the read. It’s not really a ‘how to’ book which I think is to its advantage.
Check it out. I got it from my local library and am considering buying it as I sped read it a little.

Had my meeting today with Suba Das and Henry Swindell to chat 57 Images.
Good to see that the faults in the script were obvious to spot. Got a month to remedy. The idea is that the presentation on 12th April won’t be script in hand so actors’ll have a week or so with script before working on staging days before the showings.
My script is ambitious and asks big questions so already working on ideas generated as a result of the feedback. Script has been around for time so be good to feel that I’ve cracked it with this next draft.

I’m reading Magical Mystery Tours: My Life With The Beatles by Tony Bramwell (written with Rosemary Kingsland who presumably acted as ghostwriter.
I’m not particularly interested in the Beatles as anything other than a cultural phenomenon but I am always interested in the people on the sidelines of history. I got Bessie Blount: Mistress to Henry 8th by Elizabeth Norton from the same library at the same time which I think illustrates this interest of mine.
I half remember the ‘no man is a hero to his valet’ quote that I first became aware of many, many moons ago and this perspective of the engaged and interested observer view of ‘great events’ is something that I find endlessly fascinating and is something that often drives a lot of my own writing.

Just found out that my abstract ‘Transmedia Storytelling: the pebble in the pond and the indecisive moment’ has been accepted.
Hopefully that means a week in Lisbon in May. The conference sounds really good, none of this large, multi-parallel session nonsense. Small, active participation. Really looking forward to it.
