Creating Characters Symposium

April 25, 2014

Currently working on my paper for the Creating Characters Symposium I’m presenting at in Toronto, mid-May.
Keywords are: Narrative, immersive storytelling, story structure, dwell time, authorship, translation and the audience. Those, unlike the paper title, should give you an idea of the paper’s themes.
Title is “In Thine Eyes I See The Glory: Transition, Translation, The Text and the Captivated Audience.”

I always try and style my paper titles after JMW Turner’s approach to length in regards to the titles of some of his paintings.

Walsingham book was a difficult read. The format read very list-y so found ir difficult to get through, as I did Alison Weir’s book on Anne Boleyn.

Read a number of her books and I think with this one the short three week, pretty much, structure didn’t work for me.
Now reading her book on Elizabeth first.

After reading Pig Iron by Ben Myers I’m now reading The Queen’s Agent by John Cooper.

The Queen’s Agent By John Cooper

Story of Sir Francis Walsingham, courtier and spy chief. Don’t know alot about him other than through Geoffrey’s Rush’s portrayal of him in Kapur’s two Elizabeth films. Not read much about Elizabeth. Read much more about Henry VIII, his wives and various courtiers including Thomas Cromwell (after reading Hilary Mantel’s books about this period). Suddenly my longstanding vague interest in this period is showing itself as I work my way through the tons of books on this period.

Pig Iron was good by the way. Lead character John John Wisdom in particular. Check it out.

After my David Peace marathon of reading all of his work (just finished Tokyo Year Zero the last one of his works that I had yet to read) and finishing off the latest draft of my play 57 Images Of My Father (in readiness for the Inside Out festival, taking place at the Curve Leicester from Thursday this week) I’m now reading Ben Myer’s Pig Iron.

Just started reading it but it’s shaping up to be a good read from the few pages into it that I am.
